Companies can bypass traditional journalism to get their message out. But what happens when a crisis strikes, such as Carnival Cruise and Rutgers? Isn't that the real test of whether it's journalism or marketing? It would seem in most of those instances, the company becomes more buttoned up with its "journalism" and steers away from questioning how the crisis was handled.

I took J202 with Katy Culver in the fall of 2008. I graduated in 2011 with a B.A. in Journalism and English. I remember in that class, one of the issues we discussed was the emergence of social media. There was a news story around that time about a reporter who had live-tweeted during the funeral of a child. While people had varying opinions on the matter, most generally agreed it was out of line for the reporter to do that. What I find fascinating is that, looking in retrospect in the year 2012, and taking into account how much twitter is a part of our discourse, people may not be so sure that the reporter was out of line (with all due respect to the deceased).

Question for panel:
What is the difference between fact-checking and media criticism (from Jon Stewart to Noam Chomsky)? How does media criticism interact with fact-checking in a media ecology? Is there some foundational difference between the goals and processes of the two?

I'm not sure if "Is twitter journalism?" is the most interesting question.

Some of it is, while some of it obviously isn't. It depends on what your definition of journalism is but I think its hard to argue that it hasn't become a key tool and resource for journalists around the globe. Like any other form of journalism (or tool in general), there's a responsible and irresponsible way of using it. I think the most interesting question is "How can we use Twitter to create stronger journalism?"

There's a lot of "Tweet Ethics" that are still very much up in the air. The people who can figure out how to be ethical and effective in their tweets at the same time are the journalists of tomorrow.

Does anyone know any respectable journalists who refuse to use Twitter on ethical grounds?
